Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent — a 40-day season leading up to Easter that is observed by many Christians around the world. It is a day centered on reflection, humility, and renewal.

In many churches, individuals receive ashes on their foreheads in the shape of a cross. The words often spoken are, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” or “Repent and believe the gospel.” The symbolism is direct and meaningful.

The ashes represent two core ideas:

1. Mortality
Ash Wednesday reminds us that life is temporary. In a fast-paced world focused on achievement and accumulation, this day gently re-centers us. Time is limited. What we build, who we serve, and how we love matters.

2. Repentance and Renewal
Historically, ashes symbolized humility and turning away from wrongdoing. Lent is a season of intentional growth. Many people choose to give something up — whether it’s a habit, a comfort, or a distraction — to create space for spiritual focus and discipline.

Lent lasts 40 days (excluding Sundays), reflecting the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness before beginning His public ministry. It is not meant to be a season of gloom, but one of clarity. A time to slow down, evaluate priorities, and realign with faith and purpose.
